Ed Sheeran Discusses Copyright Trial

Ed Sheeran speaks out in his first interview since his “Thinking Out Loud” copyright win. Sheeran was accused of copying music from Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” He shared what won the jury over on Good Morning America.

“101 songs with the same chord sequence,” said Sheeran. “And that was just scratching the surface,” he pointed out. “It was very quick to see that and be like, ‘Oh, yeah, it’s not original.'”

During the trial, Sheeran performed on the stand, something he had wanted to do. “You have to do your due diligence in court,” said Ed.

Following the trial, Sheeran said, “It’s devastating to be accused of stealing someone else’s song,” adding, “We need songwriters and the writing community to come together to bring back common sense” and use “trusted individuals” as music experts so the “creative process can carry on.”
